A recent report from EngineeringUK has revealed the shocking number of girls required to study maths or physics at A-Level, to match the number of males going on to study engineering and technology degrees.
The report highlights that around 150,000 girls wound need to study maths or physics )or both) at A-Level to match the number of male undergraduates. That equates to approximately 115,000 more girls required to take up these subjects.
The gender gap in Engineering has been an obvious issue for some time now, with only 18% of undergraduate students studying in engineering and technology female.
The report “From A levels to engineering: Exploring the gender gap in higher education” highlights that while 23% of male students who studied A levels in maths or physics, or both, went on to study engineering and technology in higher education. However, only 8% of female students followed the same education route.
