Originally developed by Toyota, the A3 problem-solving approach is a powerful and effective method of analysing and resolving issues that can impact the smooth running of a business. The name ‘A3’ comes from the size of paper used to outline ideas, plans and goals during the process. By following the systematic technique, companies can gain deeper insights into the challenges they face and identify solutions that can help them unlock their potential.

Here, we take a closer look at the A3 process and how it can be applied to your organisation.

What Is The A3 Process?

The A3 process is a set of principles and practices that have been developed to aid problem-solving and shape a company’s approach to workflow and management. The simple but effective tool can be used to address complex challenges and uncover lasting solutions. Used well, it can be applied to a wide range of situations and can help businesses of all shapes and sizes to achieve their goals.

Steps 1 & 2

The first two A3 process steps involve identifying the problem and breaking it down into its component parts. Doing this slowly and methodically allows you to analyse the core issue and its wider context and avoid jumping to unhelpful conclusions too early.

Steps 3 & 4

Next, you need to analyse the root cause of your problem and identify what success will look like. This generally involves setting a goal and coming up with a clear solution on how you’re going to achieve it. Digging deep into your root causes often provides valuable information on how you can put things right and develop a clear pathway to success.

Steps 5 & 6

Now you know what needs to be done, it’s time to put your plan into action. You’ll need to implement the measures that you identified in the previous steps and then put metrics in place to analyse progress and check results. However, it’s important to remember that things may not change overnight. If your metrics aren’t exactly what you hoped for, persevere with the process until you see the outcomes you want.

Steps 7 & 8

Systematically checking your results allows you to spot which of your countermeasures are most successful. These methods can then be shared with other teams and standardised across your organisation.

Implementation & Benefits

The Lean Six Sigma A3 process gives teams a logical, systematic template to use when facing complex challenges. Following the steps outlined in the process makes it easier to identify the root causes of the problem and find solutions that really work, something that’s essential for success and development.

The A3 process offers clarity, engages team members, promotes continuous improvement, and utilises visualisation to effectively communicate and solve problems. By integrating these benefits, organisations can enhance their problem-solving capabilities and drive sustainable improvements in their operations.
