Electricians are required to work in a lot of different locations, some of which are potentially dangerous and very difficult to access. Having an IPAF licence gives electricians increased flexibility when it comes to working in elevated and hard-to-reach places.
Enabling them to use a range of specialist equipment to safely access a wide variety of spaces, IPAF training is essential for all electricians who need to work at height.
IPAF training is an essential aspect of health and safety for electricians, especially those who work on commercial projects or are regularly required to work at height. The training teaches the safe operation of specialist machinery like scissor lifts, cherry pickers and boom lifts, collectively known as mobile elevated work platforms, or MEWPs.
Electricians who successfully complete an IPAF course will receive a PAL (Powered Access Licence) card, a globally recognised qualification. PAL cards need to be renewed every 5 years.
IPAF training equips electricians with the skills and know-how required to assess hazards, create emergency plans and safely use MEWPs in a range of settings. Completing this training allows electricians to work safely at height and protect both themselves and their colleagues when operating in spaces that are difficult to access.
A large number of insurance companies require IPAF certification for workers operating powered access equipment. The training shows that the electrician is able to safely and competently handle specialist equipment and that they meet the high standards required of PAL card holders.
So, not only does this specialist power equipment training improve workplace safety and efficiency, it also helps to ensure your site is compliant with insurance requirements.
Training to become IPAF accredited usually only takes one day. During the training, participants will learn about the theory involved in operating MEWPs and get hands-on practical experience working with these specialist machines. You will also be required to study work-at-height regulation so that they’re able to safely operate relevant equipment and contribute to a safe and efficient worksite.
Once they’ve completed the training, participants will have to pass a final exam. They’ll then be fully certified IPAF operators. Certification needs to be renewed every five years and must be done before the existing PAL card expires. If a licence does expire before the operator has renewed it, they’ll need to complete a full course in order to regain their licence.
